Anatomy of the eardrum:

 

The eardrum,  scientifically referred to as the tympanic membrane is a thin, cone-shaped membrane. Its main function is to transmit sound.

REASONS FOR EARDRUM DAMAGE:

The eardrum can be damaged or ruptured due to multiple reasons. Such as :

• Infections: commonly seen in children. Due to an infection, the fluid accumulating behind the eardrum causes pressure on the eardrum resulting from the fluid build up.  this can cause the eardrum to rupture.

What does eardrum damage look like?

 

An eardrum rupture is a small tear or a hole in the membrane.
Since it is a thin tissue it is very delicate. The ruptured eardrum is also called perforated eardrum.

• Noise or buzzing in the ear
• Hearing loss
• Ear infections
• Weakness in the facial muscles.

When to seek treatment?

Usually, minor ruptures repair within three months without any treatment.
Antibiotics may be prescribed, either in the form of oral medications or ear drops. If the pain or discomfort exists painkillers may also be prescribed.
If the eardrum rupture has not healed, then an ENT must be consulted. In some cases, surgery may be required. Surgery is usually an outpatient procedure Which requires very less time.
