Sinusitis is common infection found in many people across the globe. Caused mainly due to a virus infection which affects the mucous membrane lining the nasal interior, it results in the inflammation of the sinus glands. Sinus surgery is performed in severe cases of sinusitis.

Sinusitis also leads to blocking of fluids from sinuses to nose and throat. This can cause severe bacterial infection that leads to pain, inflammation or swelling. With advancement in technology, sinus surgery has been simplified and can now be performed endoscopically.

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
While conventional sinus surgery needed nasal incision, and had to deal with post operational bleeding, the new endoscopic surgery is much simpler. Endoscopic sinus surgery is performed with a thin rod with an attached camera at the end that can be inserted to the nasal cavity through the nasal orifice.
The surgery is then performed on the basis of the live feeds or images transmitted by the camera through minimal and tiny incisions. The recovery period and complexity is much short and simpler here than in conventional surgery procedures.
The procedure is done under local or general anaesthesia. The instruments used for the surgery depends upon the condition and extent of disorder in the patient. It is adjudged to be one of the safest treatment methods.
Scope of sinus surgery
Sinus surgery is performed in the following cases: -

• Chronic sinusitis which causes inflammation that are recurrent over three months
• Severe sinus infections that threatens to spread to brain, face, eyes and so on
• Brain fluid leakage through nose
• In conjunction with turbinoplasty or septoplasty surgeries
• Disorders associated with tear ducts.
• Removing polyps or growths inside the nose
• Bone removal to widen mucous drainage path

Though non-surgical treatments for sinusitis do exist, the sinus surgeries helps in alleviating the problem permanently.
