What is eardrum repair?


Eardrum repair is a surgical process that is used to repair a tear or hole in the eardrum or tympanic membrane. This surgery is also used to repair or replace the three tiny bones situated behind the eardrum. Many times repeated ear infections, trauma, or surgery may develop problems in the eardrum that ultimately corrected by performing surgery. What are the treatment types of eardrum repair process?


There are many types of repairing eardrum. They are
  • Myringoplasty- this process is used to correct small tear or hole by using gel or paper-like tissue. This process takes 20-30 minutes and can perform by using local anesthesia.
  • Tympanoplasty- this process is used when eardrum has a large hole or having a chronic ear infection that cannot be corrected by medicines. This process needs surgery. The laser light is used to remove the scar tissue or excess tissue that is developed in the middle ear. A small incision is made for the surgery behind the ear. The surgery will take 2-3 hours to complete.
  • Ossiculoplasty- this process is used to treat tiny bones of the middle ear that is also known as ossicles. These tiny bones have been damaged by any trauma or ear infections. These tiny bones are replaced by using bones provided by any donor or by using prosthetic devices.

What are the complications of performing eardrum repair?




Eardrum repair can include certain risks such as infection after surgery, allergic reactions or bleeding. The other complications, eardrum repair include
