Septoplasty is a surgery performed to correct any problems in the nasal septum, the structure inside the nose that separates the nose into two chambers. It supports the nose and directs airflow. The septum is made of thin bone in the back and cartilage in the front. Septoplasty is performed to straighten a deviated or crooked nasal septum. The primary goal of septoplasty is to correct the alignment of your septum in order to improve airflow through your nose.
People benefit from a septoplasty when they have:- A significant nasal septal abnormality and blocked nasal breathing
- Not had adequate symptom relief with medications
Surgical Septoplasty:
The primary goal of septoplasty surgery is to improve breathing through the nose. Secondarily, some patients may experience improvement in the areas of:
- Nasal discharge
- Post-nasal drip
Septoplasty Procedure:
A septoplasty takes anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes to complete, based on the complexity of the condition. You will be under either general or local anesthesia, based on what you and your doctor choose is best for you.
In this procedure, the surgeon will make an incision on one side of your nose to access the septum. They will then lift up the mucous membrane, which is the protective covering of the septum. Then, the deviated septum will be moved into the right position. Any barriers, such as extra pieces of bone or cartilage, will be eliminated. The final step is the re-positioning of the mucous membrane. You may need stitches to hold the septum and membrane in place. However, packing the nose with cotton is sometimes enough to keep them in position.
Potential Risks of a Septoplasty
If the people will unsatisfied with the results then, they will need a secondary surgery.
Other risks associated with a septoplasty are as follows:
- Scarring
- Bleeding
- Perforation of your septum, which happens when a hole forms in your septum
- An altered nose shape
- A discoloration of the nose
- A decreased sense of smell
Excessive bleeding and infection are possible risks of any surgery. Keeping your nose clean and washing your hands frequently can reduce these risks.
